Survey Plan: Day 11

Andrew Barnes

So...we move on to some of my favorite books in the Bible for the rest of this week and next week. I call them the ones and the twos. These are the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, the first and the second of each.

So...go ahead and read 1 Samuel 7-10 and 12 today. Remember to enjoy this time. Do not have the mindset that you are just checking something off the list today, but rather remember  you are digging deep into the Word of God. Think deeply about what you are reading.

So...one of the most interesting things that I find to read are farewell speeches. One of the most intriguing and poignant that I have ever read was that of Lou Gherig. Read and listen how he opened his speech, "Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." If you have some time read up on who Lou Gherig was. He was a famous baseball player who came down with an awful disease.

Now go ahead and read from and think about 1 Samuel 12:20-22, 24.

This is a part of Samuel's farewell speech to the people of Israel. Hear his words. Focus on what he is telling them. He is reminding them that they will never have an earthly king like YHWH. Their God is with them, does go before them, cares for them, provides for them, and is in control.

So, even though they now have an earthly king like the all the other nations around them they are not actually like all the other nations. They are to be different. They are to look different. They are to act different. They are to talk differently. They are to be different.

So, as we are in Passion Week how do you look to the world? What idols do you have? IS God truly your king?
