In The Presence of Jesus

Betty Routhieaux

What would it be like to be in the presence of Jesus?  What if He dropped by your house?  Would it change what you watched on TV?  The music you listened to?  What you read? Would it change your conversation?  Probably most of us would agree that it would feel quite a bit different to have Jesus in our presence.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and sup with Him and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20

Doesn’t that mean if we hear the call of Jesus and open our heart’s door that He/His Holy Spirit literally comes into us?  So, Jesus lives in me?  And in you?  And in all of us who are Christians?  Yes…Check out what the Scripture says…

Colossians 1:27 Christ in you, the hope of glory.

John 14:17 But you know him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

John 15:4  Remain in me, and I will remain in you.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?

So, if God lives in all Christians, when I am in the presence of a Christian I am in the presence of Jesus!  Shouldn’t that affect how I treat fellow believers?

I’ve always liked the verse Hebrews 13:2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. But let me take it a step further…any time we are entertaining Christians we should be aware that we are entertaining Jesus as we are in His presence as He is in them.  However we would treat Jesus is how we should treat Christians…fellow brothers and sisters…those He’s living in.

So how should we treat non-believers?  How would Jesus treat them?  He’s living in us.  Jesus would always do whatever He could to lovingly draw them to the Father.  Jesus in me will treat them the same way.  To treat them any other way is to refuse to let Jesus live through you.

If He isn’t allowed to live through you, does He really live in you?  As Paul said, Galatians 2:20 I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And He lives in other Christians as well.  Treat them as if you are in the presence of the Lord…you are.
