Break Every Chain

I love the song, “My Chains are gone, I’ve been set free…”  There’s another song that says, “There is power in the name of Jesus to ‘break every chain’.”  What are the ‘chains’ that hold us down, pull us back?

Addictions can certainly be chains.  Many people battle things like alcohol or drug addiction.  They know these things are pulling them from Jesus but have trouble overcoming them.  Addictions are obvious chains…break every chain.

How about Bad Habits…things like lying, gossiping, cheating… We don’t necessarily classify these as ‘Addictions’, but they still prove to keep us from drawing closer to Jesus.  In Romans 1 Paul classifies such as ‘wickedness’.  Since ‘everybody does these things’ we sometimes justify them and overlook their destructiveness.  They can certainly be chains…Break every chain.

Maybe we’re like the Rich Young Ruler.  He kept the Commandments just fine.  He was actually pretty proud of himself.  Then Jesus questioned him about his possessions…they had a chain on him.  Could our ‘stuff’, house, car, boat, motor home…anything like this keep us from Jesus?  Could they have a ‘chain’ on us?  Anything holding us from drawing closer to Jesus is a chain…Break every chain.

Could ‘good things’ have a chain on us?  Jesus warned about Scripture becoming ‘god’… John 5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. I’ve always said the Priest was on his way to church when God told him to help the man who had been robbed and beaten (Good Samaritan).  Church, Scripture, tithing, etc. are meant to be means of drawing us closer to Jesus.  They can actually take His place in our lives.  They can be chains…Break every chain.

Anything pulling us away.  Anything holding us back from Jesus is a ‘chain’.  “Fix your eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2)… think about good things (Phil 4:8)… set your mind/heart above where Jesus is seated next to God (Col 3:1).  Don’t let ANYTHING hold you back.  Ask Him to show you the chains.  Ask Him to ‘Break every chain’…there is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain.
